Representative Jim Trujillo District 45 has announced his re-election campaign as follows:

Rep. Jim Trujillo District 45
1901 Morris Place
Santa Fe, N.M. 87505
(505) 438-8890

PRESS RELEASE 9-14-2007

For Immediate Release Contact: Jim Trujillo (505) 470-0143

Representative Jim R. Trujillo of State District 45 is announcing his reelection campaign:

I am announcing today that I am kicking off my reelection campaign for the District 45 seat for the House of Representatives. As a legislator since 2003, I have a three term seniority that enables me to get the best standing committee assignments for my constituency. I recently chose the Education Committee to serve on since my District has 19 of the Santa Fe Public Schools’ 27 schools in or near it.

I am very thankful for the support I have received over the past five years from the people in my District and pledge to maintain the open door policy I have established. District 45, in the southwest sector of Santa Fe, is the fastest growing area that has many needs for the young families and the elderly who are its new residents. The growth has been so fast that the infrastructure and governmental services have not kept pace with the expansion. In addition, Agua Fria, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Santa Fe County, dating back to 1698 when Don Diego de Vargas granted lands to some of his soldiers, is a Traditional Historic Community without a designated tax base to provide for its needs. Both of these situations can only be addressed by legislative support.

As a retired state employee and businessman, I was able to use my knowledge of state government and the local economy to be the most effective legislator I could be for my constituency. In addition, Speaker Ben Lujan has given me some great interim committee assignments that have enabled me to best serve the people in District 45. The Santa Fe Delegation of legislators has also been supportive of my initiatives. Through some luck and friendship, I have received tremendous support from the most powerful legislators, on both sides of the aisle, to get my bills through.

I am very proud of my legislative accomplishments, having obtained funds for: the Southside Library; Tierra Contenta streets; the Agua Fria Community Center, park and Well Association; non-profit organizations, clinics and schools in the district like the Thomas-Ramirez Elementary School.

In being returned to the New Mexico Legislature by the voters in District 45, I would like to see my work help the residents of the District receive the recognition they deserve. We have many families where both parents work and each parent holds two or more jobs. We have the greatest percentage of children of all the legislative districts in Santa Fe County, as well as: the highest immigrant population, the lowest per capita incomes, the highest percentage of people without healthcare coverage, and the highest percentage of minorities. These are some of the most vulnerable people in society, but they are not asking for a ‘hand-out,’ just a ‘hand to help them up.’ Things like the: lottery scholarships, kindergarten, low-cost health care, small business loans, better paying jobs, good schools, Internet access, and low-cost mortgages on their first homes. In addition, they will pay a small user fee for having subsidized child care, after-school programs, recreational centers, and reduced-price and nutritious school meals. Services that are provided to other communities and which they take for granted, on the rich side of town. In a sense, I represent many people that have been forgotten.

Further, I want to continue my work on water, capital outlay, energy and social service issues.

Lastly, although being a legislator is a lot of hard work with its long hours for committee meetings and events going into the late hours of the night, it has been fun for me and my wife of 37 years, Vicky. We have a great family support system. Right now, I feel more energized than ever to get the job done. Also, the people in District 45 have been so appreciative of our efforts and have come up with some of the greatest ideas for legislation. This is what makes the job one to be proud of when you get home after a long day and kick your shoes off and reflect back on the day’s activities.

-30-

As his Campaign Manager please give me a call to come work on the campaign. Thanks.
